Poems

Poems

Cecil Rajendra is a Malaysian human rights lawyer and has established himself as one of the most powerful and influential, if also one of the most controversial voices in poetry from the South.

His poems have been translated into 27 countries yet for the most part his work remains unheralded and unknown among the Asian literati. Even in Malaysia you will not find his work in library bookshelves or in any anthology of Malaysian poetry.

This is not surprising. An activist at heart, Rajendra has never been part of the literary establishment. His poetry is of the streets not the academy, and preferring to forge an independent path, he is often seen as a threat to both the political and literary establishment.

Much of his poetry concerns the impacts of tourism on the South. His latest collection, Tankas from a Tsunami, is a narrative poem highlighting the horrors of the Tsunami and its aftermath.
